Thieme - Copyeditor (2-9 yrs)
A Copyeditor for a book or journal is responsible for ensuring that the content being published is error free and expressed in a consistent style. He/she is supposed to ensure consistency in the style of presentation of information, that is, in the language of the text, in tables, figures, references, citations, etc.
A Copyeditor must be post-graduate in any discipline with excellent proficiency in the English language. Post-graduates from a science background, especially life sciences, would be preferred. A Copyeditor is expected to perform the following tasks.
- Correct faulty grammar, syntax, and language usage
- Ensure accuracy and consistency in: spelling, punctuation, capitalization, hyphenation, abbreviations, list formats.
- Ensure accuracy and consistency in footnotes, bibliographies, reference lists, tables, figures, and in-text citations.
- Check cross-references.
- Raise queries for any apparent factual inconsistencies or inaccuracies.
- Introduce consistent style and tone in multi-author manuscripts.
- Suggest changes to text and headings to improve the structure.
- Ensure that summaries, end of chapter questions, etc. reflect content.
- Draw up list of abbreviations if necessary.
- Check references for correctness.
- Ensure the use of appropriate and inclusive language.
- Flag any text that is overly complicated, confusing, or does not make sense and providing suggestions for revision.
- Check the structure of tables and amend, if necessary.
- Ask for clarification of terms/abbreviations likely to be new to readers.
- Rewrite text that is wordy, overly complicated, or confusing.
- Rework transitions, moving sentences, and reorganizing sentence structure to improve readability.
