We serve customers across a wide spectrum of technical topics via our published books and video courses. An opportunity has arisen for a Marketing & Outreach professional to join our growing team, focusing on marketing our Learning Books portfolio.
Role :
The purpose of this new role is to help develop a successful marketing and outreach program for book titles aimed at early-stage tech career builders. The role will evolve over time, but the initial focus will be on outreach and networking activities to secure promotions and links for specific book titles. Were looking for an outgoing self-starting individual to build relationships in relevant online communities and find out how Packt can bring value to those trying to learn to code and start a career in tech. The Marketing & Outreach Specialist will be an ambassador for Packt Learning and will help develop our online marketing strategy.
Responsibilities :
- Work with commissioning and publishing teams to understand each titles target audience, their purchasing behaviours and how to reach them online.
- Review each titles product information (PI) to ensure it addresses audience needs and interests. Make recommendations for how to optimise PI for SEO.
- Work with stakeholders to ensure title announcements are made 30 days ahead of the publication date with all required PI.
- Plan and carry out a variety of outreach activities for each title to build visibility and reach new potential purchasers. The aim is to have titles featured on relevant community sites and recommended by influencers.
- Liaise with authors before and after publication to engage them in marketing and outreach activities. Develop an author marketing pack to show the benefits of author participation in marketing. Work with authors to set up Amazon author pages.
- From own research and author recommendation build a funnel of relevant communities (forums, blogs, chat rooms, FB/LI/Twitter groups, associations, institutions etc) and influencers. Maintain up to date contact and status lists.
- Engage and network with target communities/individuals to build relationships and understand the best approaches.
- Use articles, excerpts, author interviews and other content types to engage communities and influencers.
- Seek promotional opportunities with communities and present them to Learning team stakeholders for sign off. These could be event participation, contests, prizes etc.
- Analyse market trends to define the best-performing activities and content types to engage relevant communities. Regularly suggest and trial new activities. Use a test and learn approach to improve impact.
- Work with the Product Manager and Editorial Director to commission high-performing marketing content; facilitate its creation via in-house editorial, authors or freelance providers.
- Curate Amazon A+ page content where relevant, and optimise all titles for Amazon search and marketing (liaising with the Packt Amazon team).
- Post content on Packt social media channels as appropriate, and input to company-wide email campaigns.
- Research how Packt could build communities from scratch via group functionality on relevant platforms.
- Develop weekly/monthly reports that provide actionable data across all marketing activities.
- Support the wider Learning team with marketing advice and activities (max 15% of the time).
Skills & prior experience :
- Skilled at relationship building on LinkedIn and social.
- Ideally some influencer/community marketing experience.
- Excellent written and verbal communication style. Ability to adapt the tone to the audience and always remain professional.
- Understanding of what makes content engaging (some SEO understanding a benefit).
- Experience in creating and posting social media content.
- Commercial mindset.
- Creative writing and design experience would be a plus.
Key result areas :
- A number of sites featuring/linking to each title (measured by # links per title; community lead conversion %).
- Other community marketing activities carried out per title (measured by quantity, engagement metrics, impact on sales).
- Author engagement in marketing activities (measured by author conversion and # activities undertaken).
- New marketing initiatives trialled (measured by # trials / new initiatives).
Candidate background and profile :
- Must have 3+ years of experience in online marketing.
- Outgoing personality; natural communicator and network builder.
- Interest in communication, online PR and influencer marketing.
- Confidence and presence to represent Packt with high profile authors and influential third parties.
